1 - Google treats the meta description as indexable text, just like body text. But they do not use the meta description tag to format the meta description in the search results.... UNLESS that is the only indexable text on the page, only then will you see meta description text show up in the search results. They do not support that tag as the meta tag is intended for a page summary, they just index it the same as the body text.
